Cup Match ends in a draw

Somerset maintained the Cup Match trophy after dominating St George’s at the annual Cup Match classic. Controversy marred the second day of the game which led to St George’s Treadwell Gibbons receiving a suspended two-year ban and a fine. 

Tourism department axed

The controversial decision to axe the Department of Tourism saw a major shake-up that will make way for the new Tourism Authority.

Forty posts are to be cut but staff will be able to apply for jobs with the Authority.

Designate Chairman David Dodwell said at the time: “Change is never easy, but it is vital.” 

Bank jobs cut at HSBC

The latest round of job cuts hit HSBC with up to 25 employees facing job uncertainty. 

The bank announced that services were being transferred from the island and that they were working to redeploy staff and find alternative employment as best as possible for those affected.

Global headlines for missing body parts case

The inquest into the death of Norman Palmer, 57, made international headlines after an inquest into the matter was heard in the UK.

The case involved details of the removal of organs from an expatriate who died here in 2008 –– just days after going to the hospital for respiratory problems.

The inquest detailed that many of his organs, including his brain and kidney, had never been found. 

Barbers cut costs for kids

Dwayne and Wayne Caines teamed up with Five Star Barbershop to give school-aged boys a free haircut before school started. The initiative sought to help out parents in need of assistance.
