10:40PM UPDATE: Police can now confirm the death of 60-year-old Daniel Bruce Laubacher of Wilmington Delaware who was a guest on board the Norwegian Cruise Line.

Daniel  was traveling east along Cockburn Road in Sandys on  livery cycle, with a pillion passenger, when it appears that he veered into the westbound lane and collided with a boundary wall and a tree along the sidewalk. 

The 60-year-old man was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:15pm (Thursday Evening) and a Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to his local support system and his overseas family.

PC Steven Paynter of the Roads Policing Unit is the lead investigator and any witnesses to this fatality or anyone who may have information to the last movements of Laubacher  prior to the collision is asked to contact him on 295-0011 or spaynter@bps.bm.

This is the 5th road traffic fatality for 2014  and The Bermuda Police Service would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

At 1:22pm today (Thursday May 22nd) police responded to a report of a single vehicle road traffic collision that took place at Spar Lane in Sandys involving a tourist riding a livery cycle and a pillion passenger.

Upon police arrival to the scene the male rider, a 61 year old male was breathing and complaining of chest pains. The female 41 year old pillion passenger sustained a minor laceration to her knee and both were transported to KEMH for treatment.

We can now report that the rider of the cycle’s condition has rapidly deteriorated and his condition has been upgraded to critical and life threatening.

Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone who may have seen the collision to contact police on 295-0011.
